About Us

Our Vision:

An investment in excellence.

Our Mission:

The Gippsland Sports Academy will provide the opportunity for talented young sports people based in Gippsland to reach their potential in their chosen sport and personal life.

The Gippsland Sports Academy is a community-based organisation which provides developmental opportunities for young athletes. It covers the full extent of Gippsland, from the south-eastern fringe of Melbourne through to the New South Wales border, including the mountain communities of the Great Dividing Range, and the diverse areas of South Gippsland.

By providing programs and services to bridge the gap between club and elite levels, we aim to assist athletes to develop to high levels of performance. We also strive to overcome disadvantages faced by regional athletes, such as fewer local resources and greater travelling distances.

The Academy conducts programs which optimise fitness and skills, improve responsiveness in competitive situations, and encourage a balance within the athlete's physical and personal development.

Since its launch 1997 the Academy has progressively built up the number of sports it supports. At present, there are 10 sports, with interest from other sports for future involvement. Programs currently covered are athletics, badminton, golf, lawn bowls, squash, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

Our staff operate from premises at the Central Gippsland College of TAFE, at Newborough. However the programs themselves are decentralised as much as possible throughout the Gippsland region. Head coaches have a co-ordinating role in achieving this, liasing with satellite coaches across Gippsland, and bringing squads together for key sessions. This arrangement varies between sports and depends particularly on athletes' needs.

Administration of the Academy is overseen by a board of management whose members are drawn from a range of professional backgrounds. All have had extensive competition and sports administration experience.

The Academy and its programs are heavily supported by sponsors throughout Gippsland, and they contribute financial and "in kind" support to the Academy or to specific sports programs.

Our patron, Tim Forsyth, and ambassadors Tim Matthews and Don Elgin, are all former international athletes who have provided support and encouragement for the Academy's programs.
