About Us

Our Vision:

An investment in excellence.

Our Mission:

The Gippsland Sports Academy will provide the opportunity for talented young sports people based in Gippsland to reach their potential in their chosen sport and personal life.

The Gippsland Sports Academy is a community-based organisation providing developmental opportunities for young athletes within their own region. The Gippsland Sports Academy covers the full extent of Gippsland, from the south-eastern fringe of Melbourne through to the New South Wales border, including the mountain communities of the Great Dividing Range, and the diverse areas of South Gippsland.

What do we offer?
  •   Develop talent pathways for Gippsland athletes in a local environment, to State & National level in consultation with the State Sporting Associations and the Victorian Institute of Sport
  •   Maximise exposure to expert coaches
  •   Optimise fitness and skill development
  •   Deliver sport science programs covering, strength & conditioning, psychology, nutrition & hydration, goal setting, time management and injury management.
  •   Continually work with other Victorian Regional Academies, State and Local Government, State and National Sporting Associations & bodies and other organisations regarded as leaders in their sports.
  •   Encourage integration of people with disabilities or disadvantages.
  •   Review and evaluate programs on an ongoing basis to ensure relevance to Academy aims and objectives are not only maintained but improved.
  •   Seek resources through sponsorship, grant and donations to promote excellence among talented sportspeople at an affordable price.
  •   Each programme begins with an induction.

Since its launch 1997 the Academy has progressively built up the number of sports it supports. Programs currently facilitated by the Academy are swimming, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, tennis, football and golf.

Our staff are generously accommodated by GippsTAFE and based at the Yallourn campus in Newborough, however, program sessions are held in as many areas of Gippsland as possible. All programs are directed by a head coach and depending on the requirements of the sport there may be many coaches and other support staff under the direction of the head coach.

Administration of the Academy is headed by a Chief Executive Officer and overseen by a board of management whose members are drawn from a range of professional backgrounds. All have had extensive competition and sports administration experience.

The Academy and its programs are heavily supported by sponsors throughout Gippsland, and they contribute financial and in kind support to the Academy or to specific sports programs.

Our patron, Tim Forsyth, and ambassadors Tim Matthews and Don Elgin, are all former international athletes who have provided support and encouragement for the Academy's programs and the Academy has recently appointed former Academy athlete and Olympic swimmer, Ashley Delaney as the Morwell Bowling Club Swim Program Patron.

Further information about the Academy's operations are available in the 2010-11 Annual Report (PDF format, 3.2 MB).
