Two in Badminton Victoria squad, 25 November 2008Two Academy badminton players have been selected to the Victorian U17 training squad. Stephanie Treloar and Mihar Nandha have been named in the 32-person squad which is in training for the June Bevan Carnival in 5 months' time. The Carnival is the Australasian championship and usually includes several highly competitive teams from New Zealand. Two Victorian teams are expected to be selected from the training squad. Each squad will have 10 players an 2 emergencies. Stephanie was a member of last year's second Victorian side at the June Bevan and will have a strong claim for reselection. Mihar was a member of an U15 training squad this year but missed a place in the Victorian team. He has already played some U17 tournaments this year and will be keen to demonstrate his competitiveness in the higher age group. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Four at the top, 25 November 2008Badminton Victoria's ranking of U13 players based on selection trial results shows two Academy boys in the top 10. Josh Dunkley is Victoria's no 3 with his regular doubles partner, Tyler Chisholm not far behind in sixth. Only just outside the ten are Luke Stuckey (11th) and Adam Moore (13th). To have four players so highly ranked in their first year is quite an achievement, and all show potential for improvement in the future. The rankings are a consolidation of all singles and doubles matches in state selection trials and the results of 47 players are listed. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Badmintoners in Victorian titles, 10 November 2008Five badminton players attended the Victorian Championships for U17s on the Saturday. It is the year's last event for this age group, it was held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. Once again Stephanie Treloar was our top player when she made quarter finals of the mixed doubles and girls' doubles events. Both Grace Hanratty and Mihar Nandha are U15 players who tested themselves in this higher-age tournament. Grace teamed with the more experienced ex-Academy player, Nicola Duffield, to reach the quarter finals in the girls' doubles. Mihar was a quarter finalist in the boy's doubles. He also played well in the singles where, one round short of the quarter finals Mihar was valiant, but unsuccessful, against the no. 3 seed. Others to attend were Angela Liu and Damien Young. They both played acquitted themselves well in the intense competition but were unable to reach any final rounds. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Josh and Tyler - ever so close, 27 October 2008Silver medals to Josh Dunkley and Tyler Chisholm were the highlights of the Victorian U13 Badminton titles on the weekend. However, the progressive improvement of all players across their first season has been an equal cause for satisfaction. The four team mates, Josh and Tyler, along with Luke Stuckey and Adam Moore, all played in boys' singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. In each event Josh qualified at the top of his group. In the singles, Josh finished second in a close final, 21-18. Similarly in the doubles, Josh and Tyler took the game up to the top seeds before an even tighter 24-22 loss. Both of Josh's losses were to the Badminton Academy of Victoria's Darshand Gobinathan, who has been undefeated all season. Josh has emerged lately - along with Tyler in the doubles - as the only player able to challenge Gobinathan's supremacy. Following the Championships Josh was named in a Victorian team for the U13 Interstate Series next January at Altona. Apart from his well-earned second in the doubles, Tyler also qualified for the finals rounds of the mixed doubles. Unfortunately he was eliminated in a first round by the eventual winners, which was Darshand Gobinathan and his partner. Luke Stuckey also qualified for a final rounds, but his hopes of proceeding beyond the quarter-finals were also dashed when he, too, met with Gobinathan. The standard of competition has advanced as the season progressed. Both Luke and Adam Moore, who themselves have improved steadily, have not seen their gains translated into as many finals appearances as they would have hoped. However, their improvements and experience gained are sure to hold them in good stead for the future. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Badminton wins for Academy players, 14 October 2008Joshua Dunkley and Tyler Chisholm teamed up to win the boys' U13 doubles at the State Selection Trials in Traralgon on Sunday. In their 21-18 win Joshua and Tyler showed improvement and grit after their runners-up award in the Geelong trials two months ago. Joshua was also runner-up in the singles. Another team mate, Luke Stuckey, was a singles quarter finalist. Joshua, Tyler and Luke, along with Adam Moore, all new to the Academy this year, are a fine group of U13s who are showing potential for great results in the future. In the U17s Stephanie Treloar played some close matches, refusing to go down in any match without determined struggle. Her second round loss in the mixed doubles, 21-18, 21-18, must have been a disappointment but Stephanie and partner Hu-Wen Chew made amends by winning the consolation plate. Stephanie reached the quarter finals in the singles where she lost in three tense sets to the eventual runner-up. The girls' doubles was another quarter final achievement, and not without interest as it took the top seeds some time to take control and defeat Stephanie and her partner. Many of this season's U15 players took the opportunity to test themselves against the U17s. Grace Hanratty with Lauren Peter made the semi-finals of the girls' doubles while Mihar Nandha had a quarter finals place in the boys' doubles. Our players were less successful in the singles but should be encouraged by their very competitive doubles results at the higher level. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Gippsland medals at Badminton titles, 10 October 2008This year's Val Nesbitt Carnival for U15 players was conducted as three separate events for state, regional and individual championships. The Carnival was held at Altona last week. ![]() The successful team: Lauren Peter, Ken Peter (coach), Grace Hanratty, Kenneth Ch'ng (team manager), Amy Dowd, Mihar Nandha, Jayden Barlow, Susan Taylor (team umpire), Chris Ch'ng. Gippsland fielded an Academy based team with Grace Hanratty, Mihar Nandha and Jayden Barlow. They were joined by two former squad members, Lauren Peter and Chris Ch'ng, along with Amy Dowd. The squad was supported by Academy coach, Ken Peter. In the regional teams contest the Gippsland team finished with a bronze medal, third out of 10 sides. Gippsland narrowly missed the play-off for the top two places but can take heart that they played well and finished one place higher than last year's team. Grace and Lauren reached the semi-finals of the girls' doubles. Mihar was runner up in the boys doubles' consolation plate and, with Lauren, reached the semi-finals of the mixed doubles plate. Sarah Wong, another former Academy athlete, reached the girls' singles semi-finals. Victoria's no 1 team won the interstate championships with Sarah Wong as a member of the side. Gippsland to take on badminton's best, 26 September 2008A Gippsland team will compete with badminton players from regions across Australia in next week's Val Nesbitt Carnival for U15 players. ![]() Grace Hanratty & Lauren Peter, top doubles pair The core of the Gippsland side will be the Academy's badminton squad players Grace Hanratty, Mihar Nandha and Jayden Barlow. They will be joined by two former squad members, Lauren Peter and Chris Ch'ng, along with Amy Dowd. An Academy coach, Ken Peter, will support the team. The regional teams event will be concurrent with the inter-State competition in which Grace, Mihar and Lauren have already been selected as emergencies. In last year's Val Nesbitt Carnival an Academy squad including Lauren and Mihar finished fourth overall behind Singapore Sports School and the two Victorian teams. While the Gippsland side will be missing the strength of Stephanie Treloar and Nicola Duffield this year, it's not lacking in talent. Grace and Lauren are Victoria's no 1 ranked girls doubles partnership. Mihar is also a very capable doubles and mixed player. The teams competition will be held at Altona this year, running from next Tuesday to Thursday. Individual Australian championships will follow for two further days. Solid results in Bendigo badminton, 16 September 2008The long trip to Bendigo last week diminished numbers attending the second last State Selection Trial for the year. The Academy was represented by two U17 girls, Stephanie Treloar and Grace Hanratty, and two U13 boys, Adam Moore and Luke Stuckey. Stephanie achieved top honours with semi-finals finishes in both her doubles events, the U17 girls and mixed doubles. In the singles Stephanie was unfortunate to meet the fourth seed in the opening round. Stephanie lost after a spirited struggle, but bounced back in the consolation plate to finish second. Grace had her best result in the girls' doubles where she made the quarter finals. In the singles Grace was eliminated in the second round, in another close singles match. Luke and Adam played in U13 singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Although both had competitive performances in the preliminary round robin matches, neither was able to qualify for the final playoffs. For our U13 and U17 squad members there will be one more selection trial next month before the Victorian titles in November. Other age groups have completed their year's program. Youngsters show the way at Geelong, 13 August 2008![]() Josh and Tyler with their trophies In last weekend's U13 and U17 State Badminton selection trials, two U13 squad members, both new to the Academy this year, achieved the best results. The leading performers were Tyler Chisholm and Joshua Dunkley. Joshua was runner-up in the boys' singles and Tyler made the quarter finals. In the boys' doubles they successfully paired up to take out another runners-up award. In the U17s Stephanie Treloar was eliminated early from the singles by the top seed and eventual winner. However, Stephanie went on to win the singles consolation plate. She also reached the quarter finals of the girls' doubles. Also in the U17 girls' doubles Angela Liu achieved an equivalent result, the quarter finals, partnered by ex-Academy player Nicola Duffield. Mihar Nandha, in the boys' doubles, was yet another quarter finalist. Mihar has moved up from U15s this year and is still making his way in the more competitive age group The trials were the first of the season, and two newcomers to this year's squad, Adam Moore (U13) and Damien Young (U17) can look forward to improved results in the next rounds over the coming months. Adam played well in the round robin preliminaries and only narrowly missed on qualifying for the final rounds. Damien also played well in his first matches and, like Adam, will gain from his first experience of state-level competition. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Jack successful at Australian badminton titles, 14 July 2008Badminton squad member, Jack Burgess, had successful results at the Australian U19 Championships in Geraldton last week. Partnering with Nathan David, Jack won the doubles plate, and he was also runner-up in the singles plate. Jack had been selected as a member of the Victorian No 2 side in the CP Maddern Trophy, which preceded the individual titles. He won 9 of his 12 matches in the CP Maddern, but unfortunately Jack's team could only manage 7th place, behind Victoria no 1 and a number of New Zealand sides. Jack has twice previously represent Victoria in U17 championships. Luke Peter, with the Academy until the end of last year, played with Victoria no1. In the individual events Luke's best result was reaching the semi-finals of the mixed doubles. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Grace and Mihar win Victorian badminton squad places, 26 May 2008Grace Hanratty and Mihar Nandha have both been selected to the Victorian training squad for the Val Nesbitt Carnival in September. The Australian U15 teams and individual titles will be played at the Carnival. Their selection follows a successful run in the U15 State Selection Trials and last weekend's State Titles. From the selection squad final teams will be selected next month. Also named in the squad were two former Academy badminton squad members, Lauren Peter and Sarah Wong. Lauren regularly partners with Grace in the girls' doubles and with Mihar in the mixed doubles. Grace and Mihar consolidated their selections by solid performances in the Championships. Grace and Lauren were runners up in the girls doubles and Grace and Chris Ch'ng, another ex-Academy member, won the mixed doubles consolation. Mihar, with Lauren, made the quarter finals of the mixed doubles. Mihar also qualified for the semi-finals of the boys doubles where he was eliminated by the eventual winners. Jayden Barlow showed continuing improvement at the Championships and reached the quarter finals of the boys' singles consolation. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Badminton warm up for titles, 15 May 2008At last weekend's Badminton State Selection Tournament Grace Hanratty was the Academy's top performer. The tournament was held at Ballarat for U13 and U15 age groups. Grace was runner up in U15 women's doubles where she teamed with ex-Academy player Lauren Peter. In the singles, which was divided into two sections, Grace also finished in the top eight. Again, in the mixed doubles Grace had a good result when she reached the quarter finals before being eliminated by the eventual winners. Adam Moore and Jayden Barlow, both new recruits into the Academy this season, also played well. Adam reached quarter finals of the U13 mixed doubles. Jayden progressed to the third round of both the U15 singles and mixed doubles, but unfortunately in the latter he was eliminated when matched against Grace Hanratty and her partner. Mihar Nandha played his usual solid performances reaching quarter finals in the U15 men's singles and mixed doubles. Mihar's hopes of another good result in the men's doubles were dashed after his partner suffered an ankle injury and they were forced to withdraw. The trials were a great build up for the U15s who will be competing in the State Championships in a little over a week's time. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Mid-season pressure in badminton, 15 April 2008Competition is getting stiffer for the badminton squad players as the Victorian title events approach. However, Academy players achieved some good results at last weekend's Altona tournament. Grace Hanratty continued her good form from last season in the U15 girls' events. She reached the singles and mixed doubles quarter final as well as the semi finals of the girls doubles. In the doubles events she partnered with two ex-Academy players Chris Ch'ng (mixed doubles) and Lauren Peter (girls' doubles). In the same age group Mihar Nandha's best result was in the boys' doubles. He finished second after a closely contested three set final. Stephanie Treloar (U19) was second in the singles consolation and reached the quarter finals of the girls' doubles. In the U11 boys' doubles Liam Bentley shared a win in group2. No final was played. Jayden Barlow, new to the Academy this year, played well in his U15 singles and doubles events but was unable to progress into any finals. Former Academy players Luke Peter and Jack Burgess, both in U19s, had wins. For Luke it was the boys' doubles and Jack took out singles plate. Next month U15 and U19 age groups will play their state titles events with the final selection tournaments to be held soon after. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Good start to badminton season, 5 March 2008Academy players made a solid start in the first tournament for the commencement of the badminton season. Grace Hanratty combined with former Academy player Lauren Peter to win a Ballarat State Selection tournament event last Saturday. Grace's win was in the girls U15 doubles event. In the mixed doubles Grace was stopped short of the quarter finals by her Academy team mate Mihar Nandha. However Mihar himself was eliminated in the quarter finals. Lauren Peter was Mihar's partner on this occasion. Mihar also made the quarter finals of the boys' doubles when he defeated his team mate Jayden Barlow. Unfortunately, despite a close match with the eventual second place-getters, Mihar was unable to go beyond the quarters. The rivalry continued between Jack Burgess and Luke Peter, both in last year's Academy squad. Jack won the boys' U19 doubles event, defeating Luke in the final. Luke won the mixed doubles after Jack eliminated was in the semi-finals. The tournament was conducted at Ballarat and was the first of the U15 selection trials leading to Victorian Team selection. The next tournament will be mid-April. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Promising start for badminton, 20 February 2008The new Academy badminton squad will be inducted this weekend a number of new and talented young players joining the squad. Amongst them is Liam Bentley, who won the singles at the first U11 State Selection Trials last weekend. Liam is one of the youngest badminton players yet recruited, and one of several promising new members. Also at the trial were several of last year’s squad members, such as Jack Burgess, who have moved to other specialised coaches this year. Jack had the best results as runner-up in the U19 men’s doubles. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page

Jack and Stephanie win medals, 3 December 2007Jack Burgess and Stephanie Treloar had great results in the U17 badminton tournament at Ballarat on Saturday. Jack shared in winning partnerships in both the U17 boys' doubles and mixed doubles events. He also made the quarter finals of the singles before being eliminated. Stephanie, now competing in a higher age group, had exceptionally good rounds to finish equal third in the U17 singles. Her result confirms selectors' judgment in choosing Stephanie to join their U17 training squad. Ex-Academy player Murray Purvis also had a fine day with a second in the boys' U17 doubles and equal third in the mixed doubles. Both times Murray and his partner were defeated by Jack Burgess partnerships. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Stephanie selected for Victorian squad, 29 November 2007Stephanie Treloar has been selected for a Victorian U17 training squad. The squad will train and compete in selection trials for the U17 Australasian Championships, the June Bevan Carnival, next year. Stephanie had a successful season this year in the U15 age group, and now moves to a more competitive age bracket. However, selectors have obviously been impressed enough to want Stephanie in the U17 squad. Stephanie will be joined in the squad by a former Academy team mate, Daniel Belfield, who had several seasons in the badminton squad up until last year. The selection trials will be held at Ballarat in early February. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Sound results at Victorian U17 Badminton titles, 15 November, 2007Jack Burgess was the Academy's top performer at last weekend's State Championships. He was runner-up in the boys' doubles. In the girls' singles Angela Liu won the consolation plate. Angela has made great progress during the year and we watch her future results with interest. Jack Burgess also made the quarter finals of the mixed doubles, but on way Jack and his partner knocked out Lauren Peter and Mihar Nandha Another eliminated early from the mixed doubles was Stephanie Treloar, but Stephanie re-emerged in the plate as runner-up, after eliminating Angela Liu and Tim Reidy as she progressed. In the doubles Nicola Duffield and Stephanie Treloar, both with different partners, went through to the quarter finals. Following the championships the Victorian U17 No 1 rankings have been revised, and Jack Burgess and partner Nathan David are on top listing in the boys' doubles. Good results in badminton trial, 18 October 2007In last weekend's Badminton State Selection trial at Traralgon, Academy players once again achieved successful results. Jack Burgess scored a win in the U17 mixed doubles. In the singles he was eliminated in the semi-finals, but only after a tough three round contest. Stephanie Treloar and Nicola Duffield, both moving up to the U17s, found the going tough. After a hard-fought first round in the ladies singles, Stephanie was eliminated, but bounced back to win the consolation plate. Stephanie and Nicola also found themselves in the plate contest in the mixed doubles. Nicola teamed with ex-Academy player Chris Wong to win the plate. Stephanie and her partner were runners-up. Angela Liu and Shalee Treharne, both new to the Academy this year, and also playing U17s, played well to make the quarter finals of the ladies doubles. In U13s, Grace Hanratty made the semi-finals of the girls singles. She was eliminated after a good contest against the eventual singles winner. Mihar Nandha and Lauren Peter also put up a strong effort in the quarter finals of the mixed doubles in which they went down to the 3/4 seeds. The tournament was the final lead-in to the U13 and U17 Victorian titles next month, and with all players in their best form, we look forward with anticipation. Badminton squad outstanding at titles, 1 October 2007At the Australian U15 Badminton Championships an Academy squad proved to be one of Australia's best teams. The Gippsland Academy squad finished fourth to Singapore Sports School, Victoria 1 and Victoria 2. We finished ahead of 14 other teams from other states, major associations and academies. These included NSW 1 and 2 sides, and the Badminton Academy of Victoria. Congratulations to our squad members Stephanie Treloar, Nicola Duffield, Angela Liu, Lauren Peter, Mihar Nandha, Tim Reidy and Chris Ch'ng, and also to Damien Young who filled a spare spot in our side. In the individual championships which followed, places were dominated by the Singaporeans and top Victorian players. However Stephanie Treloar won the singles consolation plate, and she teamed with Nicola Duffield before they were eliminated by seeded players in the doubles quarter finals. Squad members entered the tournament as a training event and were totally surprised at the result. Their success shows the great depth of talent in the present U15 squad, all of whom have great future potential. It also speaks highly of our coaches, who have worked hard to support young players dispersed widely across Gippsland. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page

Badminton players put up a good show, 11 September 2007Academy players Jack Burgess and Luke Peter acquitted themselves well in the tough Australian Junior Championships last weekend at Ballarat. The Championships attracted a number of international junior players as they were held in conjunction with the Ballarat International Tournament. Jack's best performance was in the mixed doubles. Although eliminated in the second round by the eventually third-placed players, it was a close contest that could have gone either way. Luke Peter, in the same event, was defeated in the quarter finals by the top seeds and event winners. In singles, Luke was eliminated earlier, in the third round, this time by the top seeded player who was from China. Luke and Jack both entered the international tournament as well, along with ex-Academy players Jessica Lyons and Daniel Belfield. All four players were challenged by the seeding. Only Jessica was able to go through to the second round (in mixed doubles) where she was defeated by the 3/4 seeds. For all players, the international competition provided them with yet another valuable experience. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Academy players boost regional badminton results, 27 August, 2007In yesterday's Victorian Junior Regional Badminton Championships, Gippsland's best results were in the U15s, where the side finished third to the highly favoured East Metro and South Metro teams. The team comprised Stephanie Treloar, Nicola Duffield, Angela Liu, Lauren Peter, Chris Ch'ng, Mihar Nandha and Damien Young (non-Academy). Considering the stiff opposition, the side played extremely well. Other players involved were Grace Hanratty, a member of the fourth-placed U13s, and also Jack Burgess and Shalee Treharne in the sixth-placed U17 team. The U15s are now training for Val Nesbitt tournament which will be held 27-30 September at Geelong. All U15 players will be taking part, with Stephanie Treloar in the State squad. Jack Burgess in great form, 9 August 2007Jack Burgess had outstanding results in last weekend's U17 State Selection Tournament at Geelong. Jack and his partner won the boys' doubles event, and he was also runner up in the mixed doubles. In the singles Jack reached the semi-finals. His results highlight the great year that he has had playing against Australia's and New Zealand's best, and the quality of his present game shows the benefits of this tournament experience. Others to reach finals were Stephanie Treloar and Nicola Duffield who were both eliminated in the quarter finals of the girls' doubles. Each of their matches were hard-fought contests, so it was a disappointment that neither went through to the next round. There are two more rounds of U17 tournaments before the State titles in November. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page

Jack Burgess shines in NZ, 17 April 2007Jack Burgess, a member of the Medico Hygiene Services Badminton Program, has just returned form New Zealand with great results. Jack was a member of the number one U/17 Victorian team, which competed in the June Bevan team championships and the Australasian Individual Championships. The team made it all the way through to the final where they met the strong Northern Region New Zealand team, who were the defending champions. The Victorians put up a good fight but were unable to dethrone the champions in a close final. Jack continued the tournament with consistent results in the individual events. Jack made it through to the round of 16 meeting the number two seed and eventual champion losing in straight sets. Jack and partner Nathan David from Ballarat surprised many opponents by beating many higher ranked teams and making it through to the semi finals. Jack and his partner also had a great run in the mixed doubles making it through to the round of 16. At the conclusion of the championships Australasian, Australian and New Zealand rankings are announced. As Jack had consistent results for the tournament he finished the tournament with a Australian singles ranking of 9 and Australian boys doubles and mixed doubles rankings of 2 for the U/17 age group. This was a great effort by Jack and we congratulate him on an outstanding tournament. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Sparkling performances by Badminton players, 15 March, 2007Eight Academy badminton players attended last weekend’s Junior Selection Tournament at Keysborough, and all played through to the final rounds of at least one event. Best results came from Nicola Duffield, Stephanie Treloar and Chris Wong. Nicola and Stephanie were runners up in the girls U15 doubles. They were defeated by the top seeds, who had also knocked out Lauren Peter and Sarah Wong in the semi-finals. Stephanie also partnered to a place in the quarter finals of the mixed doubles (for U15s), as did Jack Burgess, who has moved up to U19. Chris Wong was our other finalist player. Chris, with his Ballarat partner, was runner up in the boys’ U15 doubles. A number of players who have moved up age levels found themselves eliminated in the early rounds when drawn against top-seeds. Over the season we expect that players will gain more experience and should adapt to their more competitive environment. Despite the age group transitions, it was encouraging to see a number
of Medico Hygiene players making the finals rounds at Altona. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
Badminton's Jack Burgess off to New Zealand, 15 February2007Jack Burgess has been selected to represent Victoria at the U17 June Bevan Championships in April. The event is an Australasian teams championship, with several teams from New Zealand and the Australian States in contention. This year the event will be at Canterbury in New Zealand's south island. Jack, along with Daniel Belfield and Murray Purvis, was selected for the State training squad. Unfortunately, Jack was the only Academy player selected when the final teams were announced. However, all three must be congratulated for making the squad. New Zealand is a strong badminton nation and will be keen to beat the Victorians, who are usually amongst Australia's best. We congratulate Jack on his selection and wish him every success. Go to News Summaries Go to top of this page
