Lawn Bowlers fare well in Traralgon Competition, 8 November 2006In last weekend's Traralgon RSL invitation fours competition, all of the competing Academy Bowls Squad played well. Jack Shaw, Brad Brcic, Gareth Rich and Daniel Laverty made up the four, and impressed more experienced players with their technical skills. At the end of the day the team finished up with one win, one draw and a very narrow loss. Over the summer months, squad members will continue to play in about 8 more Gippsland competitions. Lorraine Steel Selected in Victorians Womens Bowling Team again, 27 October 2006Congratulations to Lorraine Steel, one of our joint head coaches for Lawn Bowls, who has been selected in the Victorian Womens Bowling team. Lorraine is a regular in the Victorian Team, and her inclusion is no surprise given her history of wins in State titles. Lorraine's first win was over 25 years ago when she shared the Victorian pairs title with her mother - the first mother and daughter team to do so. Many titles have followed since, including back-to-back wins in the same event in successive years. Congratulations Lorraine, and may your example continue to inspire our athletes! Lawn bowls program planned, 5 September 2006In April twelve members of the Lawn Bowls squad attended the final of the Australian Open bowls championship at Darebin in April. Three of the bowlers competed in a mini competition to entertain the crowd during a break between matches. All had a great time meeting the bowlers, getting autographs and watching some of the best bowlers in the country. A major attraction was the merchandise on offer which our budding champions snapped up with gusto. The first training camp for the year was at Lakes Entrance in June. There was a big learning curve for our Squad of elite junior bowlers. Some had never experienced playing on a synthetic surface but at the end of two solid days of training everyone was getting the feel of it. Our second camp will be held at Yallourn Bowling Club on September 16-17, where the athletes will get in another two solid days of bowling. Laghlan Tighe will be talking to the squad about how to strive higher with their goals and ambitions. Laghlan was the head coach of the Malaysian Lawn Bowls Squad at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. On the Saturday morning Lisa Stevens will run a sports psychology session. It will be followed by Alison Caiafa on nutrition in the afternoon. The squad will be staying at Woorabinda School Camp which is about a 10 minute drive from the Yallourn Bowls Club. Our third camp will be held at the Sale Bowling Club on the September 22-24 at which Mr John Snell has agreed to come and talk to our group. We are also proposing for the squad to compete in three tournaments, from the bowls calendar, yet to be decided. The full squad is Damien Barnes, Ben Bowden, Bradley Brcic, Ashleigh Cotter, Michael Daw, Matthew Higgins, Dane Jones, Daniel Laverty, Matthew Oglesby, Lisa Phillips, Gareth Rich, Matthew Richards, Grant Secombe, Jack Shaw, Scott Weganar and Gabriella Sergi. Elite Junior Bowls Squad established, 25 May 2006The Gippsland Sports Academy inducted 16 new Scholarship holders into
its inaugural junior elite Lawn Bowls Program. Bryan Heron, CEO of the Academy, said that “the full facilities of the Academy will be made available to the bowlers with the aim of allowing them to reach their full potential in lawn bowls and personal life.” He saw the program as providing a pathway to competition at association and state, which then lead onto national levels. Twelve of the squad attended the final of the Australian Open bowls championship at Darebin in April. Three of the bowlers competed in a mini competition to entertain the crowd during a break between matches. All had a great time meeting the bowlers, getting autographs and watching some of the best bowlers in the country. A major attraction was the merchandise on offer which our budding champions snapped up with gusto. The program has a dual focus, with personal development issues such as health and time management seen to be as important as improvement of bowling skills. Clubs nominated bowlers who have displayed talent in competition - many of them are regular players in their clubs pennant teams. Final selection was made after a bowling trial at Sale. This culminated in the Induction Day held on May 14th. Tabetha Timbs of the Academy organised the day's activities and believes the day was a great success. She was impressed with the keenness of the bowlers, who were all on site 30 minutes before the scheduled start. This augured well for the program. Jack Unmack and Lorraine Steel addressed parents and bowlers, presenting an overview of program for the year. They have been appointed as joint coaches and their experience and expertise will ensure the continued growth of our juniors. The program not only aims to deliver specialised coaching but to take a holistic approach to each bowlers development, recognising them as athletes. This includes Specialist consultants such as strength and conditioning (Bio-Mechanics), Sport Psychology and Nutrition. There are also athlete career education sessions including Time Management, Goal Setting, Job Interviewing Skills/ Resume Writing and Media Awareness/Public Speaking. They will be taught to balance school, family and sporting commitments. Bowlers were fitted out for uniforms and enjoyed a healthy lunch. The full squad includes Damien Barnes, Ben Bowden, Bradley Brcic, Ashleigh Cotter, Michael Daw, Matthew Higgins, Dane Jones, Daniel Laverty, Matthew Oglesby, Lisa Phillips, Gareth Rich, Matthew Richards, Grant Secombe, Jack Shaw, Scott Weganar and Jake Whitelaw.Part of the squad is shown above, with coaches Jeff Unmack (forth from left) and Lorraine Steel (right), and panel members John Hewson and Rob Goldie. The first training session is a camp at Lakes Entrance on 16, 17, and 18 June at which Barry Lester will attend to observe, guide and speak to our future champions. Ten training sessions will be held over the coming year and bowlers will also compete in three tournaments. This program is administered by an Advisory panel which comprises nominated representatives from the regional bowling associations, an Academy board member, the two coaches and a Program Manager. Five Gippsland bowling clubs have sponsored the program for 2006: Lakes Entrance Bowls Club, Morwell Bowling Club, Sale Bowling Club, Traralgon Bowls Club, Yallourn Bowling Club. A very big thank you to the above clubs for having the foresight to see the promotion of junior development will benefit Lawn Bowls as a whole.
