Academy update, 17 April 2004 The Gippsland Sports Academy is entering its seventh year as Gippsland’s premier elite sporting development program. The Academy is a Regional partner of the Victorian Institute of Sport and uses VIS-modelled programs to develop the sports and personal skills of young athletes. This year the Academy has increased the number of sports programs to seven, involving approximately 120 athletes... End of successful Volleyball Program 2003, 16 March 2004 The Volleyball Program finished on the weekend with the last training session and a graduation barbecue. This year’s program was the largest of the Academy with 33 athletes being involved from all over Gippsland ... Tennis Victoria Program hits off, 15 March 2004 The Academy’s Tennis Victoria Program training has begun at Maffra. Eight athletes from throughout Gippsland have been selected for the program. Athletes will compete at the Geelong Grasscourt Championship, the North Ringwood Junior Championship, the Classic Clay Junior Open at Bairnsdale and the NTA Victorian School Boys and Girls Championship... Awards presentations for 2003, 9 March 2004 The Academy’s Annual Award presentations were attended by 250 athletes and family members. Guest speakers were Mrs Lisa Alexander (coach of national netball champions Melbourne Phoenix), Dr Ralph Richards (VIS Regional Academies Manager) and Tim Forsyth (Academy patron and Olympic medallist). Throws star Laurins, set for Nationals and beyond, 17 February 2004 Moe 18-year old Raff Laurins is peaking at the right time in the lead up to the National Athletics Championships. Over the past two weeks Raff has completed in the South Australian State Championships, at the Olympic Park (Melbourne) Telstra A Series Championships, and at the Victorian State Championships. Next weeks Nationals are important for selection in the National Junior team to compete in Grosseto, Italy, in July... State trials for Gippsland soccer stars, 6 February 2004 Six athletes from last year’s program have been selected to trial for the Victorian Soccer Squads. They are Thomas Ahmadzai, Jamie Dunn, Justin Kosakiewicz, Nathan Pace, and Dean Pyle (all under 16 boys), and Chloe Poole (under 14 girls) ... Badminton State selection for Melanie Smith, 5 February 2004 Morwell youngster Melanie Smith has recently been selected to represent Victoria in the 10-day Bevan teams tournament in the Under 17 age group. This tournament is conducted annually throughout Australia and New Zealand and this year will be held at North Harbour in New Zealand. Melanie, 14 years old... McKay and Laurins Country Athletic Champions, 30 January 2004 Outstanding performers in the Country Athletics Championships were 16-year old Daniel McKay (from Drouin), and 18-year old, Raff Lauren’s (Moe). They won their respective age group champion trophies... Other athletes Ashlea Lawry, Hayley Brown, Lara Trevorrow, Justine Hughes, Kylie Mackellin, Hamish Nelson, Josh Froud, and Kane Smith performed outstandingly well... Athletics camp successful lead up to State Championships, 13 January 2004 The Academy’s Latrobe City Athletics squad conducted a weekend long camp which incorporated educational sessions, performance analysis and training. Invaluable sessions were conducted by Head Coach Mark Ladbrook, Phil Shelley (strength and conditioning), Peter Winter (technique), Alison Caiafa (nutrition), Lisa Stevens (sports psychology) and Carolyne Boothman (athlete career and development) ... GSA swimmers perform well at State titles, 13 January 2004 At the Victorian Swimming Championships last week and the Academy’s LatrobeFirst Swimmers performed well. Brenton Ford and Jeremy Saunders were awarded Age Group Championships. Sam Ashby, Abbie Stockdale, Melissa Hopley, Caitie Mitchell, Glenn Ferguson and Lichelle Clarke won medals or set records ... The Traralgon Club now has 13 Nationally Qualified swimmers ... LatrobeFirst swim squad success at Wagga, 16 December 2003 Swimmers from the Latrobe First Swimming Program returned from a competition camp in Wagga Wagga, NSW with a swag of medals. The Academy Squad of 9 National swimmers, competing as a Gippsland team, won 46 medals, broke one out-of-Gippsland record and achieved 3 new National qualifying times ... Volleyball athletes invited to National Camp, 2 December 2003 Five members of the Academy’s volleyball squad have been invited to participate in the National Junior Camp. The athletes are Courtney Evans, Danielle Stott, Jamie-Lee Pearce, Jemmi Spriggs & Jessica Lloyd. All athletes have displayed great skills and a keen interest in the sport during the Gippsland Academy of Sport Volleyball Programs training sessions this year ... Gippsland Group Training announced as Soccer Program sponsor, 23 November 2003 Last year the program ran without a Program Sponsor but this year the offerings to the athletes has increased as a result of the additional funding ...
