Swimming Program
Swimming was one of the first sports to be included when the Gippsland Sports Academy was established. It is also one of the more successful, with many athletes competing in state and national level competitions. The swimming program is supported by highly accredited satellite coaches who work under the guidance of Mentor Coach, Dr Ralph Richards. One of Dr Richard's regular contributions has been the use of underwater filming to enable technique analysis, improvement and monitoring. ![]() Coaches at a training session Thanks to this technology, improvements to swimmers' performances are possible without any change in fitness. In the more technically demanding events the performance gains can become quite significant. The program also places a strong emphasis on a strength and conditioning program. The ability to maintain full control without the loss of swimming technique may require, for example, additional conditioning in supporting muscle groups. Sam Fenton, the Strength and Conditioning Coach is widely experienced in identifying swimming strength and control issues, and in tailoring supplementary training programs. In recent years year the swimming program has had athletes selected into VIS squads and into national teams. The program is also proud to have supported a number of athletes who have passed through to top metropolitan clubs, and whose continuing careers show promise at the highest level.
